Fill dirt & material calculator

Enter your length, width, and depth to estimate the cubic yards of fill dirt, topsoil, gravel, or base material you need — and how many 22-cubic-yard truckloads that is. This is an estimate; we confirm the exact quantity when we quote.

How do you calculate how much material you need?

The formula is simple: length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Then divide cubic yards by 22 to get truckloads.

  • Step 1: Measure length and width in feet; pick a depth.
  • Step 2: If depth is in inches, divide by 12 to get feet.
  • Step 3: Multiply L × W × depth = cubic feet.
  • Step 4: Divide cubic feet by 27 = cubic yards.
  • Step 5: Divide cubic yards by 22 = truckloads (round up).

Quick reference: common volumes

Some common figures so you can sanity-check the calculator. One acre is 43,560 square feet, and one El Venadito RB truck hauls 22 cubic yards.

  • 1 acre, 1 foot deep: ~1,613 cubic yards (~73 truckloads)
  • 1 acre, 6 inches deep: ~807 cubic yards (~37 truckloads)
  • 100 ft × 100 ft × 6 in: ~185 cubic yards (~9 truckloads)
  • One truckload: 22 cubic yards (covers ~264 sq ft at 1 ft depth)
